Open Voting Network
The Open Voting Network is a working group of the NYCGA. Our aim is to ensure that: (A) no willing participant is excluded from the development of the technologies and practices of primary voting and consensus making within Occupy; (B) no alternative toolset, platform or practice is excluded from the overall development effort; and (C) each user may freely choose a provider, toolset and practices based on personal needs and preferences without thereby becoming isolated from other users who make different choices. (1) Draft policy for the General Assembly
We are drafting a policy for (a) non-endorsement of single-provider voting services within Occupy, because that would promote a monopoly; and instead (b) formal support for an open network based on cross-provider vote mirroring, because that will serve as a counter-monopoly measure [VM]. We will submit it to the General Assembly for ratification once a consensus draft emerges from the process. (2) Register of qualified service providers
We maintain a register of the qualified service providers that constitute the nodes of the mirroring network, including both the development projects and the specific vote-servers. The criteria for qualification include (a) publication of votes in machine readable form, and (b) an agreement to mirror the published votes of other qualified providers. We will formalize and firm up these criteria as necessary, later. In the meantime, the register attempts to provide sufficient transparency to enable self-policing and self-administration of the network; it shows who's mirroring from whom, and who isn't.
(3) Invitation to alpha trials
You are invited to join in the alpha trials of the technologies and practices behind the Open Voting Network. Large-scale consensus making is not quite happening yet, and we want the development process that first makes it happen to be as open to participation as possible, right from the beginning. Technical architecture
A mirroring network among vote-servers cannot stand alone. It requires independent technical supports. These supports are initially provided a broader architecture that is based on the Outcast voting network [OUT]. This architecture is expected to change as new mirroring servers come online. The developers must reach a rough agreement on the shared aspects, of course, and this may entail substantial design changes. - There are several caveats to bear in mind. The network as it stands is (a) improperly hosted, (b) incomplete, and (c) difficult to use. It is improperly hosted because (i) the domain name of the pollwiki needs to be changed to something "occupy", and (ii) it still has content that is tied to a single vote-server. We're working to fix these problems. For more information, please see the notice on the pollwiki's main page. (b) The network is incomplete because only a single vote-server implements mirroring at present, and only for demonstration purposes. This means that it's not much of a network yet, of course. See section (2) for more on service provision and providers. (c) Finally, the network is difficult to use because the technology of large-scale consensus making is at an early stage of development. Nevertheless you are encouraged to participate in the early trials. See section (3) for more information.
