[DS] Developmental stages. Recursive and non-recursive aspects of the public sphere (left and right) are sustained by circular relations (arrows). Principal circularities are numbered as developmental stages: (1) cross-formal reflection of the knowledge of building cross-formal reflectors; (2) self-determination of recursive publics who steer the reflectors that support them;1 (3) public agreement on the myth that orients publics; and (4) self-determination of publics who steer their encompassing society.

  • Overplan   Documenting an ad hoc experiment that appears to be, in retrospect, an attempt at a reflective start. Expressed in its own terms, overplanning is a precursor to the moral practice of mythopoeic overguidance. It seems to work by mixing in the other moral practice (maximizing personal freedom) to yield the combined practice of maximizing personal freedom in the choice of overguiding myths. Whatever its classification, it shows promise as a start technique.

Notes

  1. ^ The term "recursive public" is from Christopher Kelty's Two Bits. Duke University Press. 2008. http://twobits.net/about/
  2. ^ Rule-making primaries are among the guides involved in steering the reflectors, as will be described here.
  3. ^ Planning primaries are among the guides involved in steering the reflectors, as will be described here.
  4. ^ Electoral primaries for small assemblies are expected to be among the guides involved in steering the reflectors. They will perform decisive "legislative" (rule-making) and "judicial" (rule interpretation) functions. Single-winner election methods will probably suffice for these small assemblies.
  5. ^ a b Executive primaries are among the guides involved in steering the reflectors, as will be described here.
  6. ^ Reflective start requires creating a special purpose (recursive) public, as described here.
  7. ^ The relation between the recursive publics and the reflector guides (figure DS) is maintained across the lifeworld gap.
  8. ^ a b Reflective start requires guides that steer the adminstration of the reflectors across the system gap, as described here.
  9. ^ Reflective start entails the explicit creation of electoral and adminstrative systems for the reflectors, as described here.
