02:27 < mcallan> conseo: sorry c, i got distracted. my first impression is that the web page below should go
02:28 < mcallan> it dominates the mockup, and serves no purpose, and will confuse those you seek feedback from
02:29 < mcallan> you want feedback on the visuals you are designing, so show the bare minimum of that
02:31 < mcallan> (2) the scale is wrong for some reason, it's huge. export at 90 dpi, and size the SVG at roughly ?800px wide or a little more
02:32 < mcallan> include a border representing the browser window, so people understand where it sits (top, extending across window)
02:33 < mcallan> (3) make the background pure black, so it's realistic (xf is black)
02:34 < mcallan> (4) remove "Right caption goes here" etc, because it's not what you want feedback on
02:36 < mcallan> (5) the two shades of green don't work, they look too similar
02:37 < mcallan> (6) it's not clear what all the numbers represent
02:38 < mcallan> (7) 10.000 will confuse the english, they expect 10,000
02:39 < mcallan> (8) the 1,481 bar looks far too big for 14% progress
02:43 < mcallan> (9) the text looks too bright. see xf.css (i think) color rule, i think it's less than FFF which is hard on eyes (too much contrast in text is no good)
02:44 < mcallan> (10) the bar looks too bright too, i think it will be blinding (as you will see when you go to black background)
02:47 < mcallan> 1 to 3 are the biggest ones to correct, because they will confuse the feedback. the rest is just my own feedback on the design so far
02:51 < mcallan> trick is to imagine it's not your design, but somebody else's, and you *want* to find fault in it
02:51 < mcallan> be super critical of it, and that will approximate what you'll hear from others
02:52 < mcallan> and soon, you will get the hang of it
02:53 < mcallan> it's very different work than coding
02:54 < mcallan> cu soon c, i'm off for the night
08:40 < conseo> puuuh. ok :-)
08:42 < conseo> thx for the feedback!
10:01 < conseo> are you interested in drafting the essay together (with our tools) or is it your personal project?
10:16 < conseo> (1): The point (for me personally) was to understand how this little space behaves when it is embedded like on the diff bridge. you said i got 1 1/2 seconds to catch the user and i don't have them alone on the site, so it gave me better idea. i have removed it
10:17 < conseo> (2) done, 800 is a bit small imo, but i guess that it is sane default target for desktops (my screen has 1920px width). done
10:20 < conseo> (3) but the difference bridge is not. i thought i should only assume the minimal ui. here http://u.zelea.com:8080/v/w/D?b=4044&a=4047&aR=2720&bR=2721# the background is not black... no problem, i can set it any time. black for now. done
10:21 < conseo> (4) done

13:39 < mcallan> conseo: re (1) i see, i didn't think of that. but it will cause you too many problems. people may start reading the text, and answering to that
13:41 < mcallan> (2) any reasonable width is ok, maybe 1024 is better (most people have at least 1280, so it leaves room for browser framing etc)
13:43 < mcallan> (3) it's just too hard on the eyes. we may have to reverse video later, either in diff bridge or xf. but go with what's easiest on eyes, i would say, so people can focus on your design with fewer distractions
13:46 < mcallan> those were the important ones, the rest is just part of the design process. takes time, and you (like me) are unlikely to get it right. many/most of my own visual designs are flawed, and waiting for fresh eyes to look at them, and come up with better ones
14:14 < conseo> ok
14:14 < conseo> mcallan: will you write the essay for yourself or draft it with our tools?
14:35 < mcallan> it needs peer review, so i think i must follow conventions. i should retain authorship and acknowledge sources, rather than collab
14:36 < mcallan> ryan just pointed me to this: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/28/world/as-scorn-for-vote-grows-protests-surge-around-globe.html
14:39 < mcallan> (the paper is not anything people need to agree on, it's purely an engineering report)
16:48 < conseo> ok, so this is not about your recent thoughts about how to openly address forums and communities with the crossforum extent concept
16:48 < conseo> ?
18:27 < mcallan> conseo: no, it is more. i will post again to liberationtech in a few minutes. we can trace the failures people are experiencing (in ny times article) to a single technical fault
22:43 < mcallan> conseo: i will put it in repo however: http://zelea.com/var/db/repo/autonomy/
22:55 < conseo> ok. do you still plan to create the model for the trackstack or does this have to wait?
22:55 < conseo> i am finished for the day
