11:38 < melvster1> greek hospital 'occupied' by workers : http://www.cadtm.org/Greek-hospital-now-under-workers do they need a website? :)
11:38 < melvster1> 'All decisions will be made by a ‘workers general assembly’.
12:11 < sdboyer> melvster1: man oh man...yeah see that's one of the funny distinctions
12:12 < sdboyer> FGA, despite the somewhat misleading name, is not really about being a "voting platform". that's more of an indirect effect, something that could come out of it eventually
12:12 < sdboyer> not the initial goal
12:12 < sdboyer> and one of the trickier challenges is representing a more open process like a GA online
12:12 < sdboyer> representing small group process is *much* easier
12:12 < sdboyer> because the group can manage the membership itself
12:13 < sdboyer> but a GA? yeah, that's a REALLY hard problem, because "inclusivity and participation" in the real world are so VASTLY different from "inclusivity and participation" on the internet
12:13 < sdboyer> apply the same-ish sort of "rules" to each situation, and the character of the results you get is profoundly different
12:23 < Amgine> self-selection bias.
12:29 < sdboyer> Amgine: i don't think that statement is self-explanatory
12:30 < Amgine> On the internet there is a huge self-selection bias: people who are present in an internet space are extremely *unrepresentative* of any population except that of the individual internet space.
12:33 < sdboyer> ahh i see. yeah, that's certainly one reason for it
12:34 < sdboyer> as an organizer-turned-activist i've always tried to be acutely aware of that particular fact, but one of the things that's surprised/interested me about occupy is how much that's ALSO true of the physical spaces
12:34 < Amgine> <- does public health survey research and methodologies>
12:34 < sdboyer> oh nice
12:34 < Amgine> so, data is one of my key things.
12:35 < sdboyer> of course you always have self-selection bias, and to an extent decisions have always been made by "people who show up"
12:35 < Amgine> <nods>
12:35 < sdboyer> the interesting question is the particular self-selection bias that emerges for a particular sort of context
12:37 < sdboyer> well, one of many interesting questions in the general domain, but from the perspective of trying to ensure participation and listening to underrepresented/marginalized voices, it's one of the key questions
12:50 < Amgine> We have a paper on a methodology for exactly that under consideration.
12:50 < Amgine> (not a real-world method, though)
13:00 < sdboyer> methodology for what piece?
13:01 < sdboyer> Amgine: ^
13:02 < Amgine> Methodology to identify people for intensive interview methods without anyone involved knowing why they are invited for a further interview.
18:31 -!- davycw_ is now known as davycw
23:15 < scor> field_occupation_dontate_info
23:15 < scor> too late to fix I guess
23:15 < Amgine> c'est tres terrible. It can always be fixed.
